Sales and his brother, Michael Sales Jr., were taken into custody after being pulled over for running a red light near Midland Avenue and Ballantyne Road in Syracuse, Syracuse Police Department Sgt. Gary Bulinski said. According to the police report, the officer at the scene smelled marijuana from Sales’ car and noticed a 12-ounce plastic cup filled with liquid. When the car was searched, drugs and drug paraphernalia were found throughout the vehicle. Police found 180 Lortab (hydrocodone and acetaminophen) tablets, three knotted pieces of plastic containing a green plant-like substance that tested positive for marijuana, a plastic cup containing gin, three digital scales and other baggies with devil, superman and pit bull insignias on them, according to the report.AdvertisementThis is placeholder text Sales and his brother were also in possession of nearly $1,000 in cash. Sales confirmed that the cup contained gin and admitted to drinking it, according to the report. The brothers were charged with fifth- and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of marijuana, according to the police report. Marcus Sales was also charged with consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle, driving through a red light and breaking the city’s open container law, according to the police report. The contraband, drug paraphernalia and each of the brothers’ cell phones were submitted as evidence. The money was seized as proceeds of drug activity, according to the police report. Both were arraigned Saturday and released from custody afterward. Syracuse football begins its preseason camp Friday, and the arrest leaves Sales’ status for the start of practice in question. Orange head coach Doug Marrone released a statement regarding Sales through the Syracuse Athletic Department on Sunday. ‘We are aware of the charges against Marcus Sales,’ Marrone said in the statement. ‘We will continue to work with the proper authorities and the University, and will handle the matter internally, according to University and Athletics Department policies. Sales, a 6-foot, 182-pound senior, was tabbed as a starter on Marrone’s 2011 preseason depth chart after a breakout performance in the Pinstripe Bowl and a strong spring season. Once the second-best prospect in the state of New York coming out of Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, Sales struggled to adjust to college football. In his freshman and sophomore seasons, he caught a combined 42 passes for 484 yards and three touchdowns. Last season, Sales caught 26 passes for 414 yards and four touchdowns. He caught the game-winning touchdown in the Orange’s upset win over South Florida. And, in SU’s Pinstripe Bowl victory over Kansas State, Sales hauled in five passes for 172 yards and three touchdowns. Sales, fellow starter Van Chew and Alec Lemon comprise what could be one of the best receiving trios in the Big East heading into the 2011 season. first_imgPutrajaya: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Tuesday defended Singapore’s proposed law to fight “online falsehoods,” but his Malaysian counterpart Mahathir Mohamad warned that anti-fake news laws were a double-edged sword that could be abused by governments to stay in power. The two leaders were speaking after annual talks Tuesday aimed at resolving disputes over maritime boundaries, airspace management and the price of water that had strained ties since Mahathir’s alliance swept to power in elections last May. Also Read – Saudi Crown Prince ‘snubbed’ Pak PM, recalled jet from USLee said many countries including France, Germany and Australia have legislation to combat fake news. Singapore took nearly two years to deliberate on the issue before the government unveiled a bill in parliament last week to combat fake news, he said. The law allows the government to remove online content it deems as false and includes a jail term of up to 10 years and hefty fines. “This is the problem of fake news and deliberate false statement being proliferated online. It is a serious problem which confronts many countries,” Lee said at a joint news conference. Also Read – Record number of 35 candidates in fray for SL Presidential polls”Singapore is not the only one which has taken legislation on this issue. The French has done so, the Germans have done so. The Australians have just done so, something similar and very draconian. The British are also thinking of doing this as well. So Singapore had to do this and we had a long process… finally we have this bill and it will be debated in the house and I hope eventually it will become legislation,” he said. Lee rejected criticisms from rights groups such as Reporters Without Borders which had voiced fear the law could further stifle free speech in Singapore, which already has stern laws on public protests and dissent. “They criticized many things about Singapore’s media management but what we have done have worked for Singapore. And it is our objective to continue to do things that will work for Singapore. And I think (the new law) will be a significant step forward in this regard,” he added. Mahathir, however, said his government will repeal Malaysia’s law against fake news as it promised. An earlier effort to do so was blocked by the opposition-led Senate but the government is expected to push it through again. “For us, we need to learn how to handle such fake news. When we have laws that prevent people from airing their views, then we are afraid the government may abuse the law as it has happened in the last government,” Mahathir said. “We do not want any government, whether this or succeeding governments, to make use of this law in order to tell and create fake news in order to sustain themselves. Of course it will be difficult to handle, but we believe we can accept the challenges and we can handle that.”last_img read more

first_imgWashington: Pakistan, obsessed with India as a perceived existential threat, has “created terrorist groups to be a tool” in its struggle against India, a former top American spymaster has said. Former CIA acting director Michael Morell, in a podcast discussion with Kurt Campbell and Rich Verma on Thursday, alleged that Pakistan is one of the most dangerous countries in the world. Pakistan has “created terrorist groups to be a tool” in their struggle against India, Morell said. Also Read – Saudi Crown Prince Salman ‘snubbed’ Pak PM Imran, recalled his private jet from US: ReportCampbell, the former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian Affairs and Verma, the former US Ambassador to India, now regularly host ‘The Tealeaves’ Podcast of the Asia Group. “What they don’t realise is that it’s impossible to keep those terrorist groups under control. And that eventually comes back to bite you. You know, I believe that Pakistan, at the end of the day, maybe the most dangerous country in the world,” Morell said. Morell who played a key role in the Abbottabad raid that killed Osama bin Laden — the al-Qaeda chief and mastermind behind the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States — in a safe house in Pakistan, said that the population of this South Asian country is exploding, and the demographics are awful. Also Read – Iraq military admits ‘excessive force’ used in deadly protests”The economy’s going nowhere. It simply can’t provide the jobs that need to be provided for the young people who are entering the labour force. The education system is literally broken. I went to Pakistan more often than I went to any other country when I was deputy director,” he said, referring to his impression about Pakistan when he was the deputy head in the CIA during the Obama administration. There’s no wonder that many Pakistani parents send their kids to madrasa and one knows what happens to a small percentage of the kids who go there. “The extremism is growing from a societal perspective. It’s growing within the military. So, it is not impossible, not tomorrow, not next week, not next year, but five years from now, 10 years from now that you could have a color revolution, Arab spring style movement in the streets of Islamabad that ends up with an extremist government there with nuclear weapons. That’s what so scary,” Morell said. According to Morell, then president Barack Obama’s Pakistan policy in his first term was to get the Pakistanis to see their strategic environment in a real way. “They still see India and, I think, for foreseeable future, will see India as an existential threat to the state of Pakistan. It’s not, it’s just not. India stopped focusing on Pakistan a long time ago. They’re focusing on their economic future,” he argued. But because the Pakistanis are so obsessed with this perceived existential threat, they’ve both organised their society in order to protect themselves from that threat. So, they’ve given an immense amount of power to the military, and much less power to the civilian government, he said. “The government therefore makes choices that I don’t believe, and many people don’t believe are in the best long term interest of Pakistan. Pakistan has spent more money on nuclear weapons than they do in education. “And they use terrorism as a tool against the Indians… and then also in Afghanistan, because they fear Indian influence in Afghanistan. So they’ve created terrorist groups, right to be a tool of theirs in the struggle against India,” Morell added.last_img read more

OSU redshirt senior Johnni DiJulius competes in a match against Nebraska on Jan. 17.Credit: Courtesy of OSUThe last dual meet of the season has arrived for the Ohio State wrestling team, and all eyes will be on how the Buckeyes handle their last opponent on the regular-season schedule.No. 10 OSU (9-3, 6-2) returns to Columbus after a three-week stint of away meets, where it is set to face Wisconsin (2-6, 1-4) on Friday at 7 p.m. After a grueling and taxing matchup with No. 1 Penn State last Friday, which resulted in a 24-14 loss, the Buckeyes will be looking to end on a high note against the Badgers. The two teams did not meet last year during the season, but Wisconsin picked up the victory in their last bout with OSU. The all-time series has the Badgers ahead 29-19-1.Despite the Badgers’ rough 2015-16 campaign, OSU coach Tom Ryan said he has the utmost respect for the program. Not only does this match mark the last regular-season dual meet of the year for the Buckeyes, but also the final time nine seniors will share that experience.Although the team will be back in Columbus to host a National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals Championships Series match, the outgoing seniors will be honored against Wisconsin for their careers at OSU.Notable seniors who will be honored are Kenny Courts, Mark Martin, Hunter Stieber and Johnni DiJulius.“Obviously it means a lot but it’s more like a shocker,” DiJulius said. “I’m in disbelief because I’m a senior. When I was a freshman watching senior night, I thought to myself I had all the time in the world, but it goes by so quick.”Courts, Stieber and DiJulius all began their journey as freshman in 2011, and will get to round out their careers together on the mat. Ryan isn’t as worried about the box score for his outgoing wrestlers against Wisconsin as much as his is about the Buckeyes giving it their all.  “In any sport, we get so caught up in winning and losing, and that can be so stifling,” Ryan said. “You do not control winning and losing. You control effort.”Effort has been a point of emphasis for Ryan and the team for years. There is a strong sense of respect held by the OSU coaching staff and wrestlers toward a program like Wisconsin’s. “(Wisconsin) is a fully funded Big Ten team, with great tradition there,” Ryan said. “They’ve got a great head coach in Barry (Davis). He was an Olympian.”Wisconsin brings in two ranked wrestlers with No. 7 Ryan Taylor at 133 pounds and No. 3 Isaac Jordan at 165 pounds. The match at 165 pounds will be watched for more than just a bout between two wrestlers with the top five nationally. It will also be watched for the family matchup. Redshirt sophomore Bo Jordan will be facing his cousin from Wisconsin at 165. The two met last season in the Big Ten championships, where Isaac Jordan earned a 3-2 victory. “The big one is at (165 pounds),” Ryan said. “Not only are they ranked two and three in the country, but they’re first cousins. That adds an element you don’t want to seep into it.” Ryan was referring to the extra emotional implication of a match between family. He also cited that in order for Bo Jordan to succeed, he must focus solely on wrestling, and not who he stares down before the opening whistle.DiJulius will be facing the other ranked opponent on Wisconsin’s roster in Taylor. He said he wants to use a quality opponent like Taylor to correct some wrongs from this season.“I just want to make sure I’m wrestling the way I want to wrestle at the national tournament,” DiJulius said. “This season I haven’t done a great job at winning the third period and scoring enough points in the third.”Wisconsin nearly emerged with an upset in its previous match against now-No. 18 Minnesota but dropped the dual meet 17-16. Against Wisconsin, all the starters from the team are expected to make an appearance. “We will have a full lineup against Wisconsin for the first time (this season),” Ryan said.Big venues aheadThe settings for the Big Ten and NCAA championships will be memorable environments, as the Buckeyes are slated to travel to Carver-Hawkeye Arena and Madison Square Garden, respectively. After the rowdy, sold-out Bryce Jordan Center in its previous match, Ryan said OSU feels prepared for crowds that will flock to Iowa City, Iowa, and New York City.“The environment is going to be every bit as crazy as it was at Penn State,” Ryan said.Carver-Hawkeye Arena holds more than 15,000 people, while Madison Square Garden holds over 18,000.After WisconsinAt the conclusion of the next match, OSU will get ready to play host to an NCWA National Duals match. The pairing will be announced on Sunday, as well as the time. read more
