he doesn’t paralyse his mind with too much of technical stuff What’s more he runs for fun Where does the x-factor come in The training effect of sport especially its repetitive practice of specifics leads to instinctive reaction to various cues For example when Virat Kohli faces hundreds of deliveries bowled at 150 kmph every day in the nets pitched outside off stump he reacts instinctively to that delivery in a match Moreover physical and mental toughness training helps world class athletes lower their heart rates Visualization goal-setting self-hypnosis and many other mental training methods are gainfully employed by coaches to help athletes simulate ‘event conditions’ without raising their heart rates or their ‘brainwave’ levels ‘Brainwaves’ are said to be synchronized electrical pulses from masses of neurons communicating with each other in the brain Delta Waves are the slowest (Comatose) followed by Theta Waves (Sleep) Alpha Waves (Meditation) Beta Waves (Waking or conscious problem solving state) and Gamma Waves the fastest (Agitated state) In sports as in creative pursuits Alpha Waves are of prime importance World class athletes – as also great artists writers poets etc – are said to have the ability to get into the Alpha state at will willfully or naturally Getting into the Alpha state a sort of a trance during events has several advantages Time goes slower the slower the brainwave rhythm This seems to be the critical difference between an ordinary athlete and a champion Kohli in the Alpha state would perceive the ball delivered to him at 150 kmph as travelling at no more than 75 kmph Former world record holder in the sprints Steve Williams says “If you do a 100 right (in the Alpha state) that 10 seconds seems like 60 seconds Time switches to slow motion Cricketers often talk about seeing the ball ‘like a football’ which is another state of altered perception connected with the trance-like state Staying in the present moment is of utmost importance in most sports Neither the past nor thinking of the future helps athletes perform; rather it distracts them from the job at hand The meditative state which helps one stay immersed in the present therefore helps athletes remain focused and to enjoy the moment In the Alpha state also athletes very often feel ecstatic free and get the feeling of being in unity with the universe Going back to the Carolina Marin-Pusarla Sindhu final at Rio which of the two young ladies was in the Alpha state The former literally dictated terms and the pace of the entire match The more aggressive Indian was never allowed to play the game that she is wont to Though Marin lost the first game at 19-21 she systematically demolished Sindhu’s game plan She screamed after every winner perhaps as a ‘cue’ to get back into the trance-like state rather than disturb her opponent Her returns were low and slow forcing Sindhu to play a game that she wasn’t accustomed to The Indian was hardly allowed a decent smash Though Sindhu fought on gamely Marin unleashed her deceptive and wristy cross-court half-smashes to catch her on the wrong foot time and again In the end she ran away with the match winning the final games at 21-12 and 21-15 That the world number one had played the final in a ‘trance’ was evident from the fact that as soon as she realized that she was the Olympic champion she fell onto the court and cried uncontrollably It was an act of bewilderment; akin to the disorientation that Bob Beamon had felt after smashing the world long jump record at the Mexico Games in 1968 Every athlete at the world level is as good as the other But the one who wins is the one who puts the x-factor to better use Austin Coutinho writer cartoonist and author has coached many state level cricketers and footballers He introduced mental toughness training to cricket and football more than a decade ago Sadiq?West Bengal (5), For all the latest Sports News, and also threw my flashlight.

the continued suspension of IPS officer Amitabh Thakur was against rules and he should be reinstated The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) filed an affidavit in the high court stating that the 1992-batch officer’s suspension stood revoked since October 11 2015 as the state government had failed to review and extend it within the stipulated period of 90 days from the day the suspension order was issued Thakur was suspended by state government on July 13 2015 The MHA’s submission came in response to a petition filed by Thakur against his continuous suspension In his plea Thakur had sought contempt of court proceedings against Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi for not deciding his appeal challenging the suspension in three weeks’ time as ordered by the Lucknow bench of the High Court while hearing an earlier petition The affidavit submitted by MHA undersecretary Mukesh Sawhney states that Thakur was suspended on July 13 2015 and the order was reviewed and extended on December 10 Non-extension of suspension order within 90 days violates the All-India Services Rules and allows an official’s reinstatement it said “As such the central government has taken a view that the suspension of Shri Amitabh Thakur IPS stands revoked with effect from October 11 2015 as per rule 3(8)a of the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules 1969” the affidavit said The MHA further stated that it had conveyed its decision to state government through a letter dated March 31 Meanwhile presenting a copy of the affidavit to the UP home department Thakur sought issuance of a formal order of reinstatement”I have presented this order to the state home department seeking reinstatement” he said Contacted UP’s Principal Secretary (Home) Debashish Panda did not reply when asked about the letter sent by MHA regarding revoking of Thakur’s suspension The IPS officer was suspended in July on charges of indiscipline and corruption The suspension order had come days after he had lodged a police complaint against Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav for allegedly threatening him over phone He had also made public the audio of the purported conversation According to Thakur SP chief was apparently irked over his (IPS officer’s) wife Nutan filing a complaint with Lokayukta against UP mining minister Gayatri Prasad Prajapati for allegedly amassing disproportionate wealth Thakur was posted as IG Civil Defence at the time of his suspension A vigilance probe was also ordered against Thakur and the vigilance department later lodged an FIR against him for allegedly holding assets disproportionate to his known sources of income In November Thakur had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi claiming he was suspended not for dereliction of duty or impropriety in official work but for working more He had also requested the Prime Minister to help him get justice For all the latest Lucknow News download Indian Express App More Related NewsWritten by Alexander McCALL SMITH | Published: August 8 2009 5:25 am Related News This is very serious Britain has long been populated by three warlike tribesthe Scotsthe English and the Welsh Much of British history consists of disputes between these tribesparticularly between the Scots and the English Since the middle of the 18th centuryafter Bonnie Prince Charlie made a vain attempt to reclaim the kingdom for the Scottish Stuart dynastyan uneasy peace has prevailedbasedin parton the understanding that Scottish pride and Scottish feathers will not be unduly ruffled But thenevery so oftensomebody threatens this delicate understanding with an outrageous suggestion This usually happens in Augustwhen newspapers have nothing better to talk about And it has happened again this August The insult to the Scots this year is that haggisthe Scottish national dishis not really Scottishbut English Now this may seem a matter of little consequence to Americansbut how would the United States react if apple pie and turkey with cranberry sauce were to be claimed as the products ofsayFrench cuisine Or if somebody asserted that baseball was invented by the Romanians (which it was) These things are a matter of national prideand people should take great care when talking about them The basis of the current claim is that an English cookbook of the early 17th century contains a recipe for haggis Thiswe are toldwas well before any Scottish recipe book gives similar information Wellnowthis assertion is so patently flimsy that it hardly requires refutation Of course there was no published Scottish recipe for haggis before thenfor the simple reason that it would have been quite unnecessary for Scots to publish a recipe for something that everybody in Scotland knew how to make Why state the obvious Its as simple as that But if further proof is requiredthen it is there in abundance English cuisine has always been very open to foreign influencesand still is If one looks at contemporary English cookbook writerswhat do they write about French foodIndian foodChinese food anything but English food And it was ever thus So it is no surprise that early 17th-century English food writers should have written about exotic Scottish dishes rather than English ones This is what these people have always done The haggisof coursehas played an important role in the Scottish national psyche not as foodbut as an invention Scots like to console themselves with the knowledge that even if today we are a small nation on the periphery of European adjunct to a defunct empireand chronically unsuccessful at something we would love to be successful at (soccer)we nonetheless have a great past as inventors Scottish schoolchildren are indoctrinated with the history of Scottish inventions Televisionthey are taughtwas invented by John Logie Bairda Scotsmanand not by Philo Taylor Farnsworthan American The Irish did not invent whiskyand Irish whiskey is not the real McCoy; McCoy himselfwhoever he waswas clearly Scottish and definitely not Irish And golf was not invented by the Dutch as misguided Dutchmen have a habit of claiming it was a product of the Scottish genius for hitting things with sticks and counting the hits So the haggis is clearly Scottishas Robert Burns understood full well when he wrote his famous poem in its praise If ones national bard writes a poem to a dish consisting of chopped-up offal cooked in a sheeps stomach together with oatmeal and spices and secured with a curious pinthen that dish must be authentically national Anywayeven if there were doubts about this which of course no right-thinking person would entertain why take an iconic dish away from a national cuisine that has so little else of distinction in it Yeswe have salmon and porridgeand one or two other dishesbut Escoffier would surely have been very unfulfilled had he been born Scottish Blithely attributing our haggis to a people who already have lots and lots of dishes most of them terribly stodgy in their national cuisine seemsif nothing elseto be gratuitously cruel It would be like eating a mockingbirdif I may be permitted a literary allusion Never heard of haggis Never tasted it Try it on your next visit to Scotlandor even England It is best taken with mashed turnipswhichincidentallywere invented in Scotlandand with a shot of whisky The whisky is to neutralise the taste of the haggisand the turnips are there for health reasons Highly recommended McCall Smith is the author of The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency For all the latest Opinion News download Indian Express App More Related
