first_imgManuel Pellegrini is an admirer of Frank Lampard and is set to hand the England midfielder a big role in his team this season, according to Dailly Mirror football writer Darren Lewis. The Chelsea legend is reportedly close to sealing a shock short-term loan switch to the Etihad Stadium, having left the Blues at the end of last season. With his 13-year Chelsea career coming to an end, Lampard wasted little time in announcing his next destination, joining a group of experienced pros in signing for new Major League Soccer side New York City. But with the American outfit not starting their debut season until March, the 36-year-old is seeking a short stint to ensure he remains at peak fitness. And while many have suggested he will struggle to force his way into Man City’s Premier League title-winning side, Lewis believes Lampard will get the chance to perform a English swansong at the Etihad this term.“I don’t think age is a barrier for City or for Lampard, I think he feels he can still contribute in the Premier League, and City want it to happen,” Lewis told the Transfer Tavern.“My understanding is he isn’t going to sign on for a bit-part role at City, he wants to get some assurances that he will play a decent amount of football next season.“City are also losing a lot of English players, so taking on Lampard would solve a problem for them.“But he won’t be there just to tick some boxes, Pellegrini is a big fan of Lampard and the manager believes he can integrate the midfielder into his team.”last_img read more
