Bangladesh backs Lanka on HR

““We stand by our Sri Lankan brothers on the issue of human rights. It’s an internal matter, and we are confident of the leadership. We don’t want to see this brought up (in international fora) at any level.” Haque told the President. During the meeting, Secretary Haque reassured the support of Bangladesh to Sri Lanka in the international fora, the President’s office said. Bangladesh has said it will back Sri Lanka on the human rights issue, the President’s office said today.The Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh Shahidul Haque gave the assurance when he met President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees today. Bangladesh is the Chair of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG). Human rights groups and some Commonwealth countries have called on CMAG to suspend Sri Lanka from the Commonwealth or shift the venue of the Commonwealth summit to be held in Colombo in November this year over human rights concerns. During the meeting the Bangladeshi Foreign Secretary briefed the President on ongoing collaborations and potential new sectors of cooperation.Deputy Minister of Ports and Highways Nirmala Kothalawala, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga and Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs Karunatilake Amunugama also attended the discussion.
